This position primarily provides direct wound care, assesses, evaluates and monitors wounds and devises planned interventions for treatment/healing. This position also tracks and trends infections, educates all staff on infection prevention measures. Makes recommendations to the Director of Nursing Services for quality improvement.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develops, maintains, and implements infection prevention policies and procedures in accordance with current standards of nursing practice, facility philosophy, and operational policies while maintaining compliance with state and federal laws and regulations.
  • Evaluates wounds and collaborates with physician to ensure optimum delivery of care for wound healing and initiate nursing care procedures in managing acute, chronic and/or traumatic wounds.
  • Knowledge of MASD and PIs (including staging).
  • Records, measures and documents resident's wounds/wound progress.
  • Develops, maintains and implements antibiotic stewardship activities; including educating staff, residents and families. Speaks with families and physicians when appropriate in order to maintain compliance with Antibiotic Stewardship Commitment.
  • Assess individual resident and overall community risk of infection. Makes appropriate recommended actions to Administrator, DON, ADON and nursing staff.
  • Conducts surveillance of infections of residents in-house, as well as any residents who are inpatient at another facility who are expected to return to admit or re-admit to HCC/SCC.
  • Makes recommendations regarding the prevention and control of infection on a 24-hour basis.
  • Tracks and monitors (for infection and healing) trending and records skin conditions and wounds/wound management.
  • Communicates directly with residents, families, medical and nursing staff, interdisciplinary team members, and department heads to coordinate care and services as it relates to preventing and controlling infection while engaging in strategies to maintain optimal health for BTV campus-wide.
  • Designs, conducts and provides educational programs for staff regarding infections and infection prevention measures.
  • Educate and counsel residents and/or their families on wound care processes and issues.


  • Current RN or LPN Arkansas licensure in good standing with ASBN.
  • Minimum one year of wound treatment experience required.
  • Willingness to obtain Infection Preventionist training within 6 months of employment.
  • Proficient in MS Office skills, with an ability to become familiar with BTV-specific programs and software.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, written, and oral communication.
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive, appropriate relationships with residents, families, and coworkers.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, develop systems to reduce problems, educate others on the systems, and monitor results.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize job responsibilities, and to work independently.
  • Must respect confidentiality of resident and coworker information.
  • Ability to rotate nursing call with other administrative nursing staff in order to provide a satisfactory answer/resolution to any nursing-related questions that arise after business hours.
